Our work with DRC Refugees

As of April 2024, over 1.62 million refugees and asylum seekers from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) are in Uganda. This makes Uganda the host to more than half of all Congolese refugees in Africa.

Why are people fleeing the DRC?

  • Violence in the north-eastern DRC, including attacks on civilians, killings, rape, and looting
  • Intertribal violence in Ituri and other provinces
  • Forced recruitment into armed groups

Where are the refugees in Uganda?

  1. Nyakabande in Kisoro District South western Uganda is the main transit center for refugees crossing the border from the DRC
  2. Rwamwanja is a refugee settlement where some Congolese refugees live Nakivale is a large refugee settlement in Uganda

What are the challenges for Congolese refugees?

  1. Poor housing, sanitation, and hygiene
  2. Limited food, clothing, and medical care
  3. Separation from family
  4. Exposure to violence
  5. Separation from the family
  6. Humanitarian Needs

The humanitarian needs of refugees, particularly women, are significant, including access to safe places, psychosocial support, and health services. AWONET provides food, clothing, and medical supplies to DRC Refugees transiting to and settling in Uganda
